Today the Cubs were suppose to play a 2 games as a split squad. 1 in Mesa vs rival Chicago White Sox and the other one is Glendale vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers but both games were cancelled due to rain. Tomorrow the Cubs are going to play the Oakland Athletics and Ryan Dempster was scheduled to make his spring training debut. But with the rain outs, will it change the Cubs plan? I don't think so and Dempster will pitch still tomorrow with Samardzija and Gorzelanny pitching the next couple days. Other notes on an off day in Mesa: Angel Guzman will opt for surgery on his injured arm. Even though he knows, lots of pitchers don't come back from this injury. I feel sorry for him, with his brother death and not to a career threatening injury Lou Pinella said that SS Starlin Castro will start the season in Triple A Iowa. I would like him to start the season in the majors but this is probably the right decision in the end. I will keep you posted.

Hello heaters, I'm sorry I haven't been here in a while. I've been dealing with some personal, and family matters. I promise to be more active. Today, and throughout Spring Training I will provide you with the most up to date Cardinals news as possible.Yesterday the Cardinals played the New York Mets, losing 17-11. As shown by the score, both teams pitching staffs struggled pretty badly. The eighteen mile per hour winds did not make it any easier. The Cardianls gave Evan MacLane the starting nod. MacLane surrendered three runs on three hits in two innings of work. MacLane was followed by Adam Ottavino, who struggled giving up three walks, and an un earned run in two innings of work. The next Cardinals pitcher was knuckleballer Charlie Zink, who blew the game wide open by surrendering seven runs [five earned] over one and a third innings of work. At the plate for the Cardinals, Ryan Ludwick led the way by going two for three, with a home run,two runs scored, and a team high three runs batted in. Prospect Joe Mather finished two for three with a run batted in. Also,Third Base hopeful David Freese had a rough game, finishing 0 for three with a strikeout. The Cardinals will play their Home Park opener at 1205 against the Mets in a Split Squad game. The Cardinals are expected to have Albert Pujols,Matt Holliday, and Bengie Molina, who did not make the trip to St.Lucie in uniform. Also,Brad Penny is scheduled to make his Cardinals debut.

Today the Cubs have reach an agreement with Cuban Defector Juan Yasser Serrano to a contract worth 250,000. The deal should be finalize in about a month now because the MLB has to approve the signing and all the paperwork have to be file and he has to pass a physical.. Bruce Levine is reporting that he will either start in High A Daytona or Double A. The Cubs hope this can be resolve time spring training ends. He is reportedly 20-21 year old and can throw his fastball from 89-92mph. Not to bad. I like the signing if it does get approve. Maybe he will be better than all teams think and worth a shot for the money they are giving him anyways at least. Waldo7239117

We are just 2 days away from seeing the guys in blue back to action. Here is the latest from Cubs camp: Ryan Theriot will now start on Thursday and play SS and leadoff. Lou said yesterday Starlin Castro might start at SS and leadoff but that won't happen. But Starlin Castro will see action by coming of the bench on Thursday. Also starters 1B Derrek Lee, 3B Aramis Ramirez, CF Marlon Byrd and C Geonvany Soto will start on Thursday is Cactus spring opener. I can't wait for seeing them all back in action again. Carlos Zambrano, Carlos Silva, Carlos Marmol,. Ryan Dempster, Esmalin Caridad and John Grabow threw like batting practice today. I hope they do good, all these players are expected to make the opening day roster. A japanese reporter ask Pinella why he calls Fukudome the "Fook" and he said I like the name and it is easier to say. Get those T'Shirts read he replied. In my opinion I like Fukudome better for some reason. That is all for now but more might come out as the night finishes up. Waldo7239117
----- -------- AUTHOR: Reds03 TITLE: What the Reds know, don't know going into 2010 DATE: 5:51:00 PM ----- BODY:
We are less than 4 days away from the Reds opening up their brand new ballpark in Arizona for Spring Training. The Reds and Indians will engage in combat at 3:30 ET, as Mike Lincoln was named the Reds' starter. Anyhow, the Reds are ready for April 5th to come to answer some of their questions. Here we go! What the Reds DO know: 1. The Reds know that Joey Votto will be one of the best players on the club. Votto hit over .320 last year and was the teams clutchest hitter. He was 3rd among the NL in OPS at .981, only behind Pujols and Fielder. The Reds' are almost certain that those numbers will be similar in the upcoming campaign. 2. Scott Rolen and Orlando Cabrera's veteran presence will help out the young guys. Rolen was acquired from the Blue Jays at last year's trade deadline, and Orlando Cabrera was singed this off season by the Reds. The Reds were 26-11 last year when Rolen was in the lineup. Also, Cabrera can help out young pitchers who do not speak English. Both guys have won a World Series and many Gold gloves. Hopefully, they can mentor others to do the same. 3. A spot for 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, C, and RF are all taken. Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Orlando Cabrera, Scott Rolen, Ramon Hernandez, and Jay Bruce are all locks to be starters at their respective positions. There will be no position battles for these spots unless one of these players go down. 4. Orlando Cabrera will be the everyday SS. Paul Janish (Reds' SS before the signing of Orlando Cabera) has said that he would like a competition for the everyday SS job, but he was denied. They didn't bring Cabera in here to back up a 3rd year player. What the Reds do NOT know 1. Who will be the everyday CF? Chris Dickerson has expressed his anger with Drew Stubbs being marked as the everyday CF on last week. Here are his comments: Yeah, absolutely, I don’t feel there’s any reason I shouldn’t be able to play center field,” Dickerson said. “I did a great job in center field. That’s where I played until I came up. I was one of the top defensive outfielders. Stubbs was the best defensive outfielder in the system, as I was the three or four previous years. I think I can play center field and be a good one at that.” Dusty Baker's thoughts: “You can be disappointed all you want to. But he allowed Stubbs to get his foot in the door, via performance and injuries. It happens. Sometimes, you’ve got to wait for your next opportunity.” Should be fun to watch this Spring 2. Who will be the Reds 5th starter? The battle for the 5 spot should be a good one. Chapman, Wood, , Maloney, Lehr, Owings, and Leake will all compete for one job. Aroldis Chapman- We all know who is this 22 year old Cuban is. The Reds signed Chapman this past January to a 6 year, $3o contract. Chapman caught scouts by surprise with his 102 mph fastball during the WBC; however, Chapman has had problems with control. During the 2006-2007 season in Cuba, Chapman struck out 100 in 81.3 innings, but walked 50. In the 2008-2009 season, the the young Cuban struck out 130 batters,, but walked 62 in just 118.1 IP. Another issue with Chapman is hit inability to throw his secondary pitches. I think he will need to be developed in the Minors, before making the rotation. Travis Wood- This lefty was drafted by the Reds out of high school in the 2nd round of the 2005 draft. Wood who lacks any MLB experience, has pretty good Minor League numbers. In the 2009 season, Wood has an ERA of 1.77 pitching in both AA and AAA. Travis Wood has also had some bumps in the road. In AA in 08, Wood had an ERA of over 7 in 119 IP in AA. Wood does not have a over powering fastball, but has a dirty Change up. He is my pick to get the job. Matt Maloney- Another lefty competing for the job. Maloney has made a few spot starts for the Reds in his career, but this year he wants more than a few. Maloney had a 4.87 ERA in 7 starts as a Red last year. He has pretty good control and decent secondary stuff. His fastball can reach the low 90s. His command is very good resulting in only 24 walks in AAA last year. Maloney was acquired from the Phillies for Kyle Lohse, and I believe he will have 8-12 starts in the MLB this year. Micah Owings- This 28 year old right hander was acquired in the Adam Dunn trade of 08. As most of us already know, Owings is the best hitting pitcher in the Bigs. He is a career .300 hitter, in 170 ABs. Last year Owings was the Reds first option to pinch hit off the bench, but his hitting will not earn him the spot. Last year, Owings posted a 5.34 ERA in 19 starts last year. The inability to pitch deep into games has hurt Micah, as he was moved to the pen near the end of last year. It is believed that Owings will not make the rotation, but will be the long reliever. Justin Lehr- This is probably the least known of the guys competing for the job. Lehr was the 5th starter from about August 1st until the end of the year. Lehr had a 5.37 ERA in 11 starts. Lehr, like Owings, does not have overpowering stuff, but locates very well. The downside of Lehr is that he is already 33 years of age, but does have a legitimate shot at making the rotation. Mike Leake- Leake was the Reds 1st round draft pick of 2009. Leake led the NCAA in wins going 16-1, with a 1.71 ERA at ASU. His 40 career wins is the 2nd most in school history. Leake has been compared to Tim Hudson will his athleticism, and has the ability to pitch deep into games. His fastball ranges from 88-94, but is usually around 91 mph. His best pitch is the slider, but also has a change up, and curve. I don't see Leake in the rotation until 2012, though. 3. Will the cultural difference hurt or help Chapman? Aroldis Chapman left his wife and his inphant in Cuba for a chance to play in the USA. He doesn't speak any English, and may never see his family again? Will this effect him come mid season when he is homesick? We'll have to wait and see. 4. Is Jay Bruce ready to step up at the Major League Level? Last year was a very disappointing year for the young Texas native. He hit well under .230 and had trouble laying off balls in the dirt. The good news is he did show signs of improvement after fracturing his right wrist. When he returned from the DL after a couple of months, Bruce hit over .300. His power numbers were still up, despite missing 61 games. Bruce and the Reds hope for a bright future.

Derrek Lee mention recently that he wants to finish his career as a Chicago Cub and would like to sign an extension with the Cubs but won't do so until after the 2010 season. The Cubs and new owner Tom Rickeets loves Lee and feel the same way about retaining him. I think the Cubs will sign Lee at the end of the season before he hits free agency to a 2 year contract worth 16 million and a club option for the 3rd year. News from Cubs Camp: The Cubs start spring training games on Thursday and manager Lou Pinella sets the rotation for the first 5 days. *Thursday: Randy Wells *Friday: Carlos Zambrano (Big Z) *Satrurday: Carlos Silva. This game is televise on WGN at 2:05. *Sunday (Split Squad): Tom Gorzelanny and Jeff Samardzija. 1 of these game sis televise on WGN at 2:05. *Monday: Ryan Dempster Pinella also said today that SS Starlin Castro may get the start in spring opener on Thursday and be the leadoff man. Also 3B Aramis Ramirez and 1B Derrek Lee said they want to play. Braves manager Bobbie Cox named his starter for opening day on April 5th against the Cubs, Derrek Lowe will start. Waldo7239117
----- -------- AUTHOR: waldo7239117 TITLE: A Look at Rising Star, Starlin Castro... DATE: 12:10:00 PM ----- BODY:
Starlin Castro who is 19 years old is on a fast track to the majors. Castro is a SS is said to be an above defender with an above arm according to multiple scouts. A scout called him a younger version of Florida Marlins star SS Hanley Ramirez with less power. You will see more of him for the next month as he receive a non-roster invitation to spring training. He was playing ball all winter in the Arizona Fall League and Domincan Winter League. In the AFL he had a .376 batting average that led all players with 1hr (he hit that when the Cubs coaching staff came to watch him) and 10rbi in 101 at-bats. He also played in the rising star game.In the DWL, he slowed down by only hitting .182 with 0hr and 2rbi in 22 at-bats. In 2009 Castro started in High A Daytona and was moved up to Double A Tennessee for the Cubs and now has a chance to make the club out of spring training before even playing in Triple A Iowa.Castro batted .302 with 3hr and 35 rbi in 358 at-bats for Daytona Cubs in 2009.Castro batted .288 with 0hr and 14rbi in 111 at-bats for Tennessee Cubs in 2009. Where Castro lists in the Cubs top prospect list and in the whole major league: John Sickels lists Starlin Castro has number 1 prospect in the Cubs system. Baseball Prospectus Kevin Goldstein has Starlin Castro rank 2nd behind Josh Vitters in the Cubs system. Keith Law of ESPN.com ranks Starlin Castro number 12 of every player in the minor leagues. Scout.com has Starlin Castro number 22 of all position players in the minor league systems. Josh Vitters is rank number 11 who is another Cubs top prospect. Baseball America has Starlin Castro rank number 1 in the Cubs system. So as you can see, the Cubs pretty much have 2 top prospects according to reports. But Castro is the one that has a chance to make the team out of spring training.Lou Pinella said that Castro will most likely not make the team out of spring training unless starting SS Ryan Theriot gets injure. But on the other hand, Pinella has been really impress by how Castro has done so far in camp. According to multiple reports, they say Castro will hit the Cubs some time in the 2010 season. Most are predicting after the half way point (all-star game). Pinella also said if Theriot gets injure he will be the first person to take over his spot. I just can't wait to see this kid play in about a week in spring training. I want this kid to make it out of spring training but that is unlikely. When Castro does in fact come up, Theriot will be move to 2nd while Castro takes over his spot at SS. That will be awesome news because Theriot does not have the range or arm to play SS while Castro does. I just can't wait for him to be on the big league club. So when will we see him, out of spring training or at the half way point? Waldo7239117
----- -------- AUTHOR: waldo7239117 TITLE: Ted Lilly Could miss a Month Now... DATE: 8:04:00 PM ----- BODY:
With 2 setbacks since Pitchers and Catchers met a little over a week ago, pitcher Ted Lilly could miss up to a month to start the season. He was said to be ahead of schedule but with his week of illness put him behind pace. Lou Pinella chimes in a little on Lilly's recent setback: "We weren't going to push him anyway. He came out here and got a little throwing in yesterday. I really haven't pressed Larry for any details. He's going to miss the first two weeks. Probably the first month of the season." Ted Lilly heard what Pinella said and did not argue, he pretty much agree with what Lou said. Ted Lilly will most likely start the season on the 15 day DL. The Cubs do have replacements in house to replace him. Jeff Samardzija, Sean Marshall, Tom Gorzelanny, Carlos Silva and maybe players that played in minors last year could bloom and make a start. I think it is good for the Cubs to take there time on him because it is in the beginning of the season and when he returns there is lots more baseball to play. Waldo7239117

----- -------- AUTHOR: Josh TITLE: From Prospects to Superstars! DATE: 5:37:00 PM ----- BODY:
Some Pirates fans look back on the Pirates teams of the past and wish that the Pirates still had some of the players that they traded away. The three outfielders who started the 2008 season for the Pirates, were leading the league in RBIs as an outfield unit before they were seperated by trades. That year the Pirates seemed to be in every game because they could come back from large deficits with the help of their power hitting outfielders and their catcher Ryan Doumit. Now that outfield which was made up of Jason Bay, Nate Mclouth, and Xavier Nady, is all gone. However that outfield was traded for something the Pirates needed badly, and that is Pitching. Jason Bay, Nate Mclouth, and Xavier Nady were considered to be Pittsburgh's superstars and the team missed them badly when they were traded. However, to begin the 2010 season, the Pirates have completely replaced the production that those outfielders provided. Three recent prospects will now take the place of those superstars that the Pirates had two years ago. Garret Jones in right field will be asked to replace the production of Jason Bay, Andrew McCutchen in center field will be asked to replace the production of Nate Mclouth, and Lastings Milledge in left field will be asked to replace the production of Xavier Nady. McCutchen was a prospect in the Pirates farm system up until June of last year, Lastings Milledge was a prospect for the Mets and he was in the Nationals farm system when the Pirates traded for him last year, and Garret Jones was a prospect for a combined nine years in the Braves and Twins farm systems. These three outfielders are all five tool players and they are very capable of replacing the players who patrolled the outfield for the Pirates before them. Garret Jones was acquired by the Pirates as a minor league free agent and he was given an invitation to camp last year. Andrew McCutchen was the Pirates first round pick out of high school in the 2005 Major League Baseball draft. Lastings Milledge was acquired by the Pirates from the Nationals in exchange for 29 year old outfielder Nyjer Morgan. The Pirates were very resourceful when they traded their superstars, because not only did they replace them, they acquired a lot of young pitching which will help the team immensely. Look for Jones, McCutchen and Milledge to make huge contributions offensively for the Pirates in 2010. -Josh (Pittsburghbaseball)
----- -------- AUTHOR: joshrcay TITLE: Pirates Spring Training 2010: Report #2 DATE: 5:37:00 PM ----- BODY:

Well after the first week of spring training, the position players start reporting for spring training. And now that the position players are in Bradenton, the main focus of spring training is focused most of team chemistry. I will also go over anymore position battles that are arising.

Manager John Russell wants to use spring training as a bonding experience after the Pirates made seven trades last June and July. The Pirates have a fairly settled team considering they lost 99 games last season. Jeff Clement will try to make the conversion from catcher to first baseman, and if that fails, then RF Garrett Jones would shift to first and Ryan Church likely would move in as the starting right fielder.

Player Notes

--INF Ramon Vazquez underwent arthroscopic microfracture surgery on his right knee in mid-November, he revealed when he reported to spring training. The procedure was not as invasive as many of the microfracture surgeries NBA players have undergone in recent years, and Vazquez is expected to be ready for opening day.

--3B Neil Walker is going to work out at various positions this spring, including catcher. Walker was a catcher when the Pirates selected him in the first round of the 2004 draft but was switched to third base in 2007 while playing at Class AA. He has spent the past two seasons as the starting third baseman at Class AAA Indianapolis, but 3B Pedro Alvarez, the Pirates' top prospect, is likely to begin the season at that level this year, and 3B Andy LaRoche is the starter in the major leagues.

--RHP Craig Hansen will throw off a mound March 10 for the first time since being sidelined by a rare nerve condition in his upper back last April. The Pirates' training staff has no timetable for when Hansen might be able to see game action.

--RHP Jose Ascanio will be examined by orthopedist James Andrews on Feb. 25 in Pensacola, Fla. Andrews operated on Ascanio's shoulder last October. Ascanio won't be able to pitch in games until at least early June.

--RHP Tyler Yates, who had a second Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his elbow last year during the All-Star break, has progressed to playing long toss. He likely will be ready to pitch in games sometime in July.

Injury Report

Right-handed reliever Joel Hanrahan was found have a pronator-flexor strain in his pitching elbow. He may not be able to throw for a month and seems likely to begin the season on the disabled list.

"I felt good coming into minicamp and I probably tried to crank it up a little too much there," Hanrahan said. "I tried to psyche myself out and say the pain I felt wasn't really anything. I took a week off after minicamp. I didn't feel great but I felt like I could throw. But I know that I'm not doing myself or the team any good by trying to throw now. I've got to let it get better." While Hanrahan is out, Evan Meek will take over 7th inning duties.

The battle between Daniel McCutchen and Kevin Hart continue on, and it will take a good amount of spring training games before we know who will have that fifth spot. So, look for my third report next Friday, March 5th.

----- -------- AUTHOR: Reds03 TITLE: Breaking down the Reds' lineup DATE: 5:36:00 PM ----- BODY:

The Reds were 29th in the league last year in batting average, 20th in home runs with 158, and 26th in the league in Slugging % with .394%. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that these are not good offensive statistics. Yes, the Reds were bombarded with injuries, but that is no excuse to be 2nd to last in BA. The additions of Rolen and Cabrera for a full year should put some fear in the pitcher's hearts. Without further ado, here is the Reds 2010 lineup!

Drew Stubbs CF- Stubbs was called up to the Reds in the middle of 09. In 42 games with the Red stockings, Stubbs hit a .267, and 17 RBI. After getting called up, Stubbs led the team in HRs, and was 2nd in stolen bases and total bases. The ironic thing is that Stubbs only had 3 HRs in 411 ABs at AAA compared to 8 Hrs on the MLB in over 200 ABs less. He has very good speed and is capable of swiping 40-60 bases if he can reach base. The Texas native looks to be the Reds everyday CF out of Spring Training, but is not a lock for the spot.

Orlando Cabrera SS- Cabrera signed with the Reds this off season to a one year deal worth $3 million. The Reds made it known that they needed a bat from the SS position throughout the off season. Last season the 35 year old played for the A's and Twins and combined to hit .284 with 36 doubles, 9 HR and 77 RBI in 160 games. He led all Major League shortstops in RBI and was fourth among players at his position with 83 runs scored. The Reds hope his veteran experience can lead the team to a playoff birth.

Joey Votto 1B- In my opinion Votto is with out a doubt the best player on the team. He was 3rd in the NL in SLG %, only behind Pujols and Fielder. Votto finished the year hitting 3.22, 24 HRs, and 84 RBI, despite missing a large chunk of games do to depression. Another thing that makes Votto tough is that 3 out of 10 of his fly balls (Not counting HRs) drop for hits. That's .300 for you non mathematicians. Also, the Canadian led the team in hitting with RISP. Votto is going to be one of the best 1B in the game in the near future.

Brandon Phillips 2B- Everyone in the Reds' organization loves this young man. He is funny, outgoing, and best of all, he can play. Phillips is one of the most talented fielders in the MLB, but can also do it with the lumber. Phillips is coming of two consecutive 20-20 seasons, along with a .276 BA, 20 HRs. Phillips led the Reds' in RBI with 98, but has publicly said he does not feel comfortable batting 4th. Can the Reds afford to keep Phillips and Votto in the future??

Jonny Gomes LF- Gomes was signed this week to a one year deal. Gomes was a bright spot in the Reds' outfield last year, hitting .267 with 20 HRs and 51 RBI in only 98 games. The downside of Gomes is his inability to hit right handed pitchers. Gomes hit well under 2.70 against them, but 3.02 against lefties. The Reds have been looking for a power hitting right hander since Adam Dunn was traded in 2008. Hopefully, they found their guy.

Scott Rolen 3B- The guy brings leadership, a good work ethic, and talent to the lineup. Rolen was acquired from the Blue Jays last year at the trade deadline for Edwin Encarnacion and showed the Reds he could still play. He hit only .270 in 40 games, BUT the Reds were 26-11 with him in the lineup. Rolen is capable of driving in 100 as he has done 5 times in his long career. Also, he's no slouch with the glove. Rolen adds veteran leadership and productivity.

Jay Bruce RF- Jay Bruce was the Reds' top prospect not too long ago. He struggled mightily in his sophomore campaign hitting under 2.25, and struggled to make contact vs lefties. The upside of Bruce is that he is only 22 years old and showed signs of improvement. He has some power. In 101 games, Bruce hit 22 Home runs. A large part of those games that he missed was due to a fractured right wrist, but he rebounded strong. Bruce was hitting .207 before the injury, but leaped to .326 in 18 games after. Bruce is one of the Reds' biggest keys to success this year.

Ramon Hernandez- Hernandez was another Red that was resigned in the off season. Hernandez suffered a knee injury at the end of July and only played 81 games in 2009. Despite missing so much time, he was one of the Reds' cluchest hitters with a .328 AVG with RISP. Also, his fluency in Spanish will help out guys like Chapman, who doesn't speak any English. Ramon Hernandez is a good fit for the Reds young rotation.

This lineup could be a danger to teams in 2010!

When the Pirates traded Adam Laroche at the trade deadline last year, everyone assumed that Steve Pearce would take over the first base job. Steve Pearce started the next eight games for the Pirates at first base before getting a day off. This day off was not out of the ordinary but then he began to get a "day off" every couple of days which led to him getting inconsistent playing time. Pearce is your typical power hitting firstbasemen and this inconsistent playing time had a negative affect on his batting average. After struggling as a starter for the Pirates, many fans now believe that Steve Pearce is a player who had a great minor league career but it didnt translate into the major leagues. It is definitely too early to say this but since the Pirates have pressure on them to build a winning organization, they might not be willing to give Steve Pearce another chance. The numbers show that when Steve Pearce was given the first base job and played eight days in a row, he played well offensively, however when he was pushed in and out of the lineup his numbers dropped significantly. Steve Pearce is going to be given a chance to compete for the first base job in spring training this year and he will need to do something to show the Pirates management that he is ready to play everyday in the big leagues. It is in the Pirates best interest to keep a player like Steve Pearce around in the organization, either at the triple A level or on the major league ballclub. Steve is a guy who provides bigtime power and he will show this power at the major league level some time in the near future. It is up to the Pirates to make the decision on him now, they can either be patient with him or give up on him. Since Steve Pearce is a right handed batter, and most of the Pirates power hitters are left handed, he provides a balancing affect to the lineup. Steve Pearce could be the guy that breaks up the left handed batters in the lineup and makes the opposing managers job harder. The Pirates should give Steve Pearce another chance because he could be the difference between the Pirates making the playoffs or the Pirates missing the playoffs for an 18th straight year. -Josh (Pittsburghbaseball)
----- -------- AUTHOR: jesse5shsu TITLE: Astros Hoping to make their 45th Season A Success DATE: 10:04:00 AM ----- BODY:
The Houston Astros are celebrating their 45th anniversary this season. They started as the Colt 45's back in 1965, and have seen some great players along the way. Nolan Ryan, Jimmy Wynn (aka The Toy Cannon), The Niekro's & their knucklebalss, Jose Cruz, Mike Scott, and of course "The Killer Bees," Biggio & Bagwell. The newest "Bee" is looking forward to the season, as Lance Berkman is eager to start the year, and feels the team's offseason moves are going to have a positive impact on the season. Minute Maid Park has had 10 years of baseball played as well. The Park opened in 2000 as Enron Field, and has been a hitter's ballpark from the inaugural season to the present. The Crawford Boxes make for a short porch in left, and the man patrolling Left Field hopes to have another RBI filled season. Carlos Lee reported to Spring training in good shape an on time this year. Some may remember him confusing the arrival date last year, as the big left fielder arrived two days late and not in the best of shape. He has produced well in the middle of the lineup however, and looks ready to have another good season at the dish. Opposite from Lee is Hunter Pence in Right Field, and he is looking to improve in all facets of the game this season. He has said that perfection is his ultimate goal, and he will keep striving to achieve the best season in every facet the of the game. He wants his defense, offense, and intangibles to keep progressing. He wants to be a better hit and run player, better base stealer, and more patient at the plate. He told Astros .com that he plans on improving all of these areas and more in a recent article, and this attitude seems to be contagious as the Astros appear loose, happy, and eager for the 2010 season. To complete the outfield is Centerfielder Michael Bourn. Bourn was the Astros MVP last season, and hopes to be the catalyst at the top of the order to this Houston offense. The players know that the team needs to score some runs this year, and if Bourn can continue to hit well, get on base, and run like he showed last season, the lineup will be able to be prolific for the "Good Guys." Only time will tell how the season will pan out for the boys from Houston, but all signs appear to be positive in Spring Training's early stages. Workouts are upbeat, and outlooks are right where they need to be so far.
----- -------- AUTHOR: joshrcay TITLE: The Needed Step-it-up Guy for the Pirates DATE: 8:11:00 PM ----- BODY:
With 17 losing seasons and counting, the Pirates will definetly need guys to step up this season. Guys that are young and have yet to do something special. There is one guy in particular that will need to have a step-it-up year hitting 2nd in the batting lineup. That man is second baseman Akinori Iwamura.
Iwamura made his MLB debut in 2007 as a 28 year old rookie for the Tampa Bay Rays. He started out his career by playing in 123 games for the Rays. He hit 7 HRs with 34 RBIs and 82 runs scored. He had a decent .285 avg. with 140 hits, 21 doubles, and 10 triples. The very next year he played as an all-time starter for the Rays with 152 games played. Despite playing more games, he had one less HR with 6. His batting average also dropped at .274 and 48 RBIs with 91 runs scored. He also had 172 hits with 30 doubles and 9 triples. His plate discipline got worse over these two years, but everything else improved, due to playing more games.
Last year, Iwamura only played 69 games after a torn anterior ligament which ended his 2009 season. Iwamura only hit one homer and had 22 RBIs with 28 runs scored because of the injury. Although he did have a .290 avg. which was an improvement. He had 67 hits, 16 of which were doubles and 2 triples. So, after his 2009 season, Iwamura improved his plate discipline, but no one knows whether or no Iwamura will improve anymore. That's the real question here...can he step it up?
Well looking into the 2010 season, Iwamura is very optimistic. Talking about his injury through an interpreter, Iwamura said "It feels very good, but it's still not 100 percent, but I proved last year I can still play at a high level. I think I can play just like I did in the World Series. It will be fine next season, completely healthy." At age 30 though, is Iwamura really healthy and ready to go? We will find that out in spring training.
Iwamura is a decent on-base type that is fairly consistent. He doesn't hit many homers nor steal many bases, though. He is the guy that I think needs to be the most improved player for the Pirates to break this losing streak. He needs to hit at least .295 and hit about 10 homers to be called an improvement. If he can live up to those small expectations and stay healthy, he will be a nice little help to guys like Garret Jones, Andrew McCutchen, and Ryan Doumit in their quest to break the 17.

Last year, Garret Jones became a fan favorite in Pittsburgh after he displayed tremendous power in the final three months of the season. Garret may be joined this year by another Jones, Brandon Jones was picked up by the Pirates off of waivers from the Braves (Also Garret Jones original team). Brandon Jones was a highly regarded prospect in the Braves farm system until he became expendable because he was going to be eligible for the rule 5 draft. In order to do Jones a favor, the Braves released him which allowed him to choose which organization he would sign on with for the 2010 season. Brandon Jones chose the Pirates, and as a good athlete who is capable of playing all three outfield spots, he could prove to be valueable for them. He will be given a chance to compete with Ryan Church in spring training for the starting job in right field. However since Brandon Jones is with a new organization he is no longer eligible to be claimed by another team in the rule 5 draft so the Pirates could have him start the season at AAA Indianapolis. During his time in the Braves farm system, Brandon Jones was always a big power hitter at each level he played at. Jones has similar power to Jayson Heyward who is now the number one prospect in baseball and also a part of the Braves organization. However because of his concerning strikeout rate against left handed pitchers, the Braves did not feel that Jones was part of their future. As a left handed power hitter, Brandon Jones could be viewed as similar to Garret Jones. The fans of Pittsburgh would be very happy to accept another late bloomer if Brandon Jones can provide some of the same excitement at PNC park that Garret provided last year. Brandon Jones is a low risk player for the Pirates to take a chance on, they are paying him only a minor league contract and they did not have to use a high draft pick on him. This is a win-win situation for the Pirates because Brandon Jones provides competition for Ryan Church and he has the potential to turn out to be another late blooming superstar. The Pirates team will look very different this year and for this reason they hope they can overcome their struggles of previous years and compete for the NL Central division title. ~Josh (Pittsburghbaseball)
----- -------- AUTHOR: MrBaseball09 TITLE: Strength of the Brewers schedule: April DATE: 3:37:00 PM ----- BODY:
Thoughts: My overall synopsis of April is that it is a relatively easy start to the season. The Crew will have a few tough games along the road, but overall they should be able to breeze through the month without too much trouble. I say this because they will be taking on teams such as the Pirates (who they have consistently dominated over the last few years), San Diego, and Washington. Who are arguably three of the worst teams in the league. The Crew opens up the month and year with a six game home stand in which they will face the Colorado Rockies, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Now, the Rockies have proven to be a decent club over the last few years, however, with Marquis gone their rotation remains a major issue. What happens when you put poor pitching up against good hitting? You get burned. Key Series: St Louis @ Milwaukee (April 9th-11th): St Louis. always manages to field a tough club. And this year they did just that. This will be a huge series for the Crew who is looking for a chance at winning the division. Although it is unlikely, If anyone is going to beat out the Cardinals for the division title, it's going to be Milwaukee. It should be interesting to see how these two clubs fair against each other this year as in 2009 they split the season series at 9-9. Aside from Cinncinati, the Brewers were the only team in the division that put together a .500 record against them. Projected Record: 14-7 - Gavin Giles (Milwaukee, WI)
----- -------- AUTHOR: Reds03 TITLE: Chapman looking good DATE: 11:01:00 AM ----- BODY:
It has finally arrived, a baseball fans dream...... Spring Training. The Reds' pitchers and catchers reported on Thursday afternoon for their first workout. All eyes were on the 22 year old Cuban, Aroldis Chapman. Chapman threw off the mound on his first day, and Walt Jocketty (Reds' GM) liked what he saw. "Very impressive," Jocketty said after Chapman finished throwing and moved on to hitting. "I'd like to see him when a hitter gets in there. He showed good command. Everything was right around the strike zone. I watched him do his fielding drills over there, and that was pretty good." Another benefit for Chapman is his catcher, Ramon Hernandez. Chapman doesn't speak any English, but luckily for Chapman, Hernandez is fluent in Spanish. "One of the better things to have happened so far is to have a catcher that knows Spanish," Chapman said. Hernandez's thoughts on the Cuban.... "He threw hard. Today he was pretty good," Hernandez said. "They told me [before] he was maybe a little wild. I was surprised with what I saw. He's got a lot to learn. He's got good velocity, a changeup and a slider. He needs a little experience. The coaches will teach him well. I am going to say you will see him for a long time, if he stays healthy." When asked if Chapman can make the the rotation, Bryan Price responded saying "He can start anywhere," Price said. "But we want to assess him and make sure wherever he starts, it's the right place. It might be Cincinnati. It might be someplace else in our system. I don't know that yet. I think this kid could go into a ballgame tomorrow and be ready to compete. He's extremely athletic. He's a quick learner. His stuff is better now, in my opinion, than it was in the WBC -- at least from a command and delivery standpoint. I'm looking forward to seeing him pitch and learn." On his second day Chapman liked what he did. "Today was really good. It went fine," Chapman said. "I think the week is getting better as it goes." A big issue with Chapman is his command. "Everybody knows about his power and everybody knows that he has to work on his command," Miller said. "Today was a command day, where he was going to try to throw it over the plate. I don't know how hard he is throwing. It's hard to tell when a guy is around the zone." The Reds' are excited to see the young man in game action, they expect him to make several starts during Spring Training. Reds03

In an age where a group ballplayers and athletes in general seem to think of number 1, and no-one else, not naming names *ahem* Mr Woods, Mr Bonds *ahem*, there is a touching story to note. This is of Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster. Dempster has a 10month old daughter, Riley, who has been fighting a disease called DiGeorge syndrome for the entirety of her short life. DiGeorge syndrome is a disease where genes are simply lost, and this causes catastrophic effects on the immune system, physical abnormities, and potential heart defects. 86% of infants with the syndrome die before 6 months. Symptoms differ between patients, and in Riley's case, she is unable to swallow, and needs a feeding tube. As you can guess, as a child of a pro sportsman, as Dempster puts it, "Shes' a tough little fighter". A touching tale, from a player who has had his problems. Moved to the pen for three years, as a closer, and last year, as a starter, went 11-9, with a 3.65 ERA. In 2008, he went 17-6. As you can see, he has improved. Now with extra motivation, he seems to think his little angel can help him in tough spots. “I definitely got a lot of motivation, a lot of inspiration from my daughter and from my family. For what we did go through you want to be a better baseball player.” And his daughter has given him a new outlook on life, saying, “I watch what she goes through on a daily basis and I know she’s tougher than everybody in here and a lot tougher than I am,” he said standing at his locker. “So she’s challenging me to be a lot better. That’s for sure. She inspires us. You know, watching. If you’re going through that, I can do anything. I really feel that way.”

----- -------- AUTHOR: joshrcay TITLE: Pirates Spring Training 2010: Report #1 DATE: 6:23:00 PM ----- BODY:
Welcome to the 2010 pre-season for the MLB, it's going to be quite a year. And this means that the Pirates pitchers and catchers reported to Bradenton, FL for the start of spring training. This will be one of my many reports on spring training throughout the rest of February and March. Some new additions going into spring this year include second baseman Akinora Iwamura , outfielder Ryan Church, and closer Octavio Dotel. We'll have to wait and see how these guys perform, but now let's get onto the first report from spring training. On the first day, Neil Walker geared up as catcher for the Pirates pitchers. No, there are no position changes...Walker just said he was "exploring his options" and just "knocking some rust off". Ryan Doumit still obviously has the starting job. One big position battle that may have already been settled is Kevin Hart over Daniel McCutchen for the starting fifth spot. Well just today it all points to Kevin Hart for the starting job. Manager John Russell said that Hart would be one of the starters and McCtuchen among the bullpen, although Russell was hesitant to actually confirm Hart has the job. Russell, talking about Hart said, "He's going to do everything he can to make sure he makes a good impression and shows he's ready for it. We've got some other very good candidates, but he's working awfully hard. Time will tell, but he's in a good position right now." Hart only went 1-8 last year with a 6.92 ERA last year after being traded to the Pirates. "We're working on some new mechanics and a new windup, so it's really just muscle memory," Hart said. "This offseason, I was in front of the mirror every night, working on getting to the same points. You have to train your muscles to repeat the motions." Hart has been working on slowing down his delivery to give his balls more of a sink. Hart looked very sharp yesterday. "He's throwing the ball really, really well," Russell said, arching eyebrows in emphasis. "So we're very excited." There is also news that the Pirates want to get Jeff Clement into the lineup, so either Lastings Millidge or Ryan Church may have to sit on the bench to let Jones play outfield and let Clement play 1B. Clement hit .274 with 21 homers and 90 RBIs in Triple A last year. We'll have to wait and see what happens over the course of the spring. NOTES: Outfielder Ryan Church checked into camp on Friday. Only seven position players - including Andrew McCutchen, Lastings Milledge, Delwyn Young and Ronny Cedeno - have not yet been spotted at Pirate City. The first full-squad workout is Tuesday. ... Reliever Jean Machi was given medical clearance Friday and threw a bullpen session. He was held out of Thursday's workout and had extra physical tests. Look for my second report coming next week sometime. ~Josh Redcay (joshrcay)

----- -------- AUTHOR: Josh TITLE: The Strength of the Pirates Bench DATE: 7:45:00 PM ----- BODY:
Every manager wants a bench that provides depth and power from both sides of the plate but not many managers have this luxury. Well it appears as if this year John Russell of the Pittsburgh Pirates might have this luxury. The Pirates have a very good balance on their bench with two switch hitters, a lefty batter, and two right handed batters. This will give the Pirates plenty of options this year in pinch hitting situations and depth to help them overcome injuries.
Bobby Crosby: As a right handed batter, he provides the power off the bench for the Pirates against left handed relievers, he backs up three positions, first base, shortstop and third base.
Jeff Clement/Ryan Church: Both of these batters provide the Pirates with power from the left side of the plate and a spring training competition will decide which one of these guys starts and which one sits on the bench. Ryan Church backs up all three outfield spots and Jeff Clement backs up first base and catcher.
Delwyn Young: A switch hitter with some power from the left side but very little power from the right side, he has been among the league leaders in pinch hits over the past few years. He backs up both corner outfield spots and second base.
John Raynor: The Pirates rule 5 draft pick from this year who will be used as the teams primary pinch runner, he provides some power as a right handed batter and should be useful as a pinch hitter. He is a reserve outfielder who can play all three outfield positions, he could also be used in late game situations as a defensive replacement if necessary.
Jason Jaramillo: A switch hitting catcher who provides a solid bat off the bench, while he is not a very big home run threat, he is always a threat to come up with a huge extra base hit. He only backs up the catcher position and he does a fine job of it when called upon.
Ultimately, the Pirates quest for the NL Central division crown will be helped significantly if these guys can provide them with clutch hits in late game situations. A strong bench makes a managers job much easier and it is something that the Pirates have lacked over the past few years.

----- -------- AUTHOR: erich job TITLE: The History of the St.Louis Cardinals DATE: 6:47:00 PM ----- BODY:
Hello heaters, the other day we explored the history of Busch Stadium. Today we will look at the history of the St.Louis Cardinals entire history. The Cardinals were founded in 1882,as part of the American Association as the St.Louis Brown Stockings. The Brown Stockings played at Sportsman's Park 1882 through 1892. The Brown Stocking made an immediate impact, winning four straight League Penants from 1885 through 1888,winning the American Association's version of the World Series in 1885,and 1886 against The Chicago Cubs, [they were the Chicago White Stocking until 1886]which started they're long lasting rivalry which continues today. After the American Association went bankrupt in 1892,the Brown Stockings moved to the National League. In 1892 Sportsman's Park was renovated and was now named Sportsman's Park II. In 1899 the team changed their name to the Perfectos. The Perfectos moved into League Park, also in 1899. In 1900 the team changed their named to the Cardinals, which they are known as today. From 1902 through 1954,the American League's St.Louis Browns also played in St.Louis until moving to Baltimore in 1954. Their home field was Robinson Park. In 1920,the Cardinals were bought by former New York business executive,Sam Breadon. Breadon named Branch Rickey,a well known baseball executive who would go on to be a major part of MLB's Color Barrier later in his career as his General Manager.Breadon sold the teams current field,Cardinal Field, and moved them to Sportsman's Park III. Breadon used the money from Cardinal Field to invest in their farm system. In 1922 Second Baseman Rogers Hornsby won the Triple Crown award by hitting .401,with forty two home runs, and 152 runs batted in. Hornsby would again win the Triple Crown in 1925, hitting .393,with thirty three home runs, and 143 runs batted in. In 1926 the Cardinals won their first National League penants, and went on to beat the New York Yankees in the World Series,a defeat which the Yankees would avenge two years later by sweeping them. The Cardinals started off the 1930's in dominating fasion by making it to the World Series in 1930,and 1931,winning in 1931. In 1934, the team earned the nickname "Gashouse Gang" due to their intimidating composure. The Caridnals would go on to win the World Series over the Detroit Tigers, led by Dizzy Dean, who is the last National Legue Pitcher to win thirty games. In 1937, Left Fielder Joe Medwick became the last National Legue hitter to win the Triple Crown, hitting .374,with thirty one home runs, and 154 runs batted in. The Cardinals continued to dominate the National League in the 1940's, with World Series wins in 1942,1944,and 1946,led by Stan "the man" Musial. After 1946,the Cardinals suffered a slight slump. In 1942, General Manager Branch Rickey left to become General Manager of the Dodgers. In 1953, the team was bough by the world famous Anheuser-Busch Brewery, and August "Gussy" Busch became team president. The Cardinals would return to domination in the 1960's. In 1964, the Cardinals traded pitcher Ernie Borglio, and two other players to the Chicago Cubs for Outfielder Lou Brock, and two other players. In St.Louis the trade became known as "Brock for Brogilo".The Cardinals beat the Yankees in the 1964 World Series, led by Lou Brock, and twenty game winner Bob Gibson. The World Series victory proved that the Cardinals could go on after the retirement of Stan Musial in 1963.In 1966,the team moved into Busch Memorial Stadium, where they would host the all-star game that year. The Cardinals again won the World Series in 1967,defeating the Boston Red Sox. Bob Gibson led the way, pitching three complete games in the series. Gibson's 1967 ERA was a mind boggling 1.12,which is still a live ball era record. In 1968 the Cardinals reached the World Series again, behind Bob Gibson's three complete games,to go a long with thirty five strikeouts, including seventeen strikeouts in game one. The Cardinals lost game seven, due to a crucial error by Cardinals Outfielder Curt Flood. In 1970,Bob Gibson won his second. In 1971,Joe Torre won the National League MVP. The Cardinals did not win a penant in the 1970's. The Cardinals finished 1981 with a 30-20 record. [the season was shortened due to a player strike] In 1982,The Cardinals acquired Shortstop Ozzie Smith from the Padres in exchange for Garry Templeton. Ozzie Smith would go on to win thirteen Gold Glove awards. The acquisition of "The Wizard" also led to the acquisition of a new form of ball playing, known as Whiteyball, named after Cardinals Manager Whitey Herzog. The Cardinals would go on to win the World Series in 1982,and 1985. They reached the Series in 1987,but lost to the Minnesota Twins. The Cardinals hit another brief digression in the early 1990's. In 1990,long time Manager Whitey Herzog [1980-1990] was replaced by former Braves, and Mets Manager Joe Torre. The Cardinals had several winning seasons under Torre, but failed to reach the post season. In 1996,the Cardinals were purchased by investor William DeWitt Jr. DeWitt's first two acts as owner were to move the team to a new park, [Busch Stadium II] and hire legendary Oakland A's manager Tony LaRussa to replace Joe Torre. Under LaRussa, the Cardinals would go on to win the NLDS,however they fell short in the NLCS,losing to the Atlanta Braves in seven games. 1998 was perhaps the most memorable year in Team history,as Mark McGwire broke Roger Maris's single season home run record by hitting seventy home runs. Despite McGwire's record, the Cardinals finished the season with a record of 83-79,and did not make the playoffs. For the Cardinals, the new milenium meant a new opportunity. Led by their new superstar,Albet Pujols, the Cardinals won Division titles in six out of seven seasons from 2000 through 2007. In 2004,the Cardinals finished with a record of 105-57.Despite their impressive regular season record, and dominance in the post season, the Cardinals were swept by the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. In 2005,the Cardinals won 100 games, but lost to the Houston Astros in the NLCS. In 2006, the Cardinals finished with just eighty three wins, but that was enough for them to win a Wild Card berth. The Cardinals went on to become the first Wild Card team to win the World Series. On August,29th,209 the Cardinals won their 10,000th game, beating the San Diego Padres. The Cardinals would go on to the NLDS,only to lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cardinals have certainly had an illustrious history since it's inception in 1882. With current name stays such as Albert Pujols,Yadier Molina,Kyle McClellan, and Jason Motte, the Cardinals seem destined to keep their winning tradition alive in the future.

"The Reds traded for Josh Hamilton for who??"" Who the heck is Edinson Volquez?" "Fire the GM!!" "There goes our playoff hopes for the next 10 years." These thoughts raced through the heads of Reds' fans all over, after Josh Hamilton was traded to the Rangers for Daniel Ray Herrera and Edinson Volquez. Volquez began his career in the Texas Rangers' organization. In just a few years, Volquez was called up to the Big League level; however, he did not fare well. Edinson lost all 4 games that he pitched. He posted a dreadful 14.21 ERA in this time. After spending 5 months in AAA the next year, he received another shot, but failed again. This time he won 1 of hist starts but was charged with a 7.29 ERA. The Rangers believed it was best to send the young Dominican down to A ball, to work on his control. Volquez responded well, working his way through the system, until he was traded to the Reds for Josh Hamilton. The Reds hoped that he would show the brilliance that he had glimpses of in the Rangers organization. He made the rotation out of Spring Training, thanks to his velocity and knee buckling Change up. The Dominican dandy was 17-6, with a 3.21 ERA, 206 strikeouts, a WHIP of 1.33, 96 walks, and he was also an All Star. It looked as if the Reds had found an ACE for the future, but Volquez still lacked the ability to get guys out early in the count and extend late into games. In 2009, Volquez did not follow up his All Star campaign as many hoped he would. He only pitched 49 inngs until he had to have Tommy John Surgery on his elbow, sidelining him for the reminder of the year. Edinson is not set to return until the middle of the Summer. The Reds hope that Volquez can come back healthy and be a dominant force in the Reds rotation and MLB. Reds03

----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Blogger Franchise835 DATE:2/17/2010 02:32:00 PM Pujols will be third guaranteed, Carpenter out of respect if healthy will be opening day starter...also i would more than expect Rasmus batting 2nd not 8th..you won't see Colby 8th or 9th really ever....if LaRussa goes back to lineup w/ pitcher 8th you will see Ryan 9th or vise versa based on lefty/right matchup with Schumaker/Julio Lugo ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Blogger erich job DATE:2/17/2010 05:41:00 PM I appreciate your input, but if you look at Rasmus's hitting numbers, compared to Ryan's numbers,Ryan's numbers are way better. I understand that Rasmus was a rookie, and he had the injury bug,but I don't see him hitting at the top of the order this year. Will he in 2011? Probably yes. I also forgot that Larussa puts pitchers in the 8 spot. ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Blogger Franchise835 DATE:2/19/2010 03:22:00 PM LaRussa likes a guy with good OBP in the 9 spot to act as a second leadoff man....much of the time last year Ryan was batting 9th, with Rasmus in the 2/7/6 hole. Why do you have Holliday 3rd??! that never happened at all Pujols hasnt batted anywhere outside of the 3 hole im pretty sure in 7 to 8 years now, outside of pinch hitting. More than likely you'll see Yadi as a 6 or 7, LaRussa loves his ability to hit the ball to opposite field. He even started in the cleanup hole at least 4 times last year.

I think a much more accurate lineup is

against Righties

1. Schumaker
2. Rasmus
3. Pujols
4. Holliday
5. Ludwick
6. Molina
7. Freese
8. Pitcher
9. Ryan/Lugo

against lefties
1. Lugo
2. Ryan
3. Pujols
4. Holliday
5. Ludwick
6. Rasmus
7. Molina
8. Freese
9. Pitcher

you will see a lot of different lineups cuz LaRussa likes switching up the lefties and righties so Rasmus may be in the 5 or 2 hole a lot. He always has said that no matter what the strength of the starting pitcher he likes to give them different looks so they dont get comfortable seeing 3 or 4 righties in a row ----- -------- AUTHOR: erich job TITLE: The History of Busch Staudim DATE: 3:04:00 PM ----- BODY:
Hello Heaters, today we are going to explore the history of the place that the St.Louis Cardinals call home,Busch Stadium. Busch Stadium, also known as Busch Memorial Stadium ,was built on May,25,1964,and was completed in 1966.The Original Busch Memorial Stadium was demolished in 2005,and a the "New Busch" was opened in 2006. From 1966 to 1981,the Stadium was called Civic Center Busch Memorial Stadium. The Original Busch homed the bronze statues of Stan Musial,Enos Slaughter,Dizzy Dean,Rogers Hornsby,Red Schoendist,Lou Brock,Bob Gibson,James "Cool Papa"Bell,George Sisler,Jack Buck, and Ozzie Smith. The stadium was originally built with natural grass, but due to St.Louis's humid summers,it was replaced with astroturf in 1970. The Original Busch was also home to the NFL's St.Louis Cardinals from 1966 until they moved to Arizona in 1987.The St.Louis Rams also played at the original Busch for four games in 1995,due to the delay of the RCA Dome's opening. The Original Busch also hosted the World Series in 1967,1968,1982,1985,1987,and 2004. The Original Busch is also where Mark McGwire hit his 62nd,and 70th homer runs in 1998. It is also where Barry Bonds broke the "Curse of The Bambino" in 2004.Needless to say,the History created at Busch Memorial staduim was indeed illustrious. Hopefully the "New Busch" can help create some of its own unique memories in the future.

When the Pittsburgh Pirates traded Nyjer Morgan last year, many of the fans and players were unhappy with this move. Nyjer was a fan favorite as well as a good influence and friend to all in the Pirates clubhouse. The Pirates management gave the usual explanation for the trade by saying, this move was what is best for the team. In return for Nyjer Morgan, the Pirates received Lastings Milledge an outfielder from the Washington Nationals. Lastings Milledge was 24 at the time, 5 years younger than the player he was traded for. However, when Milledge made his debut with the Pirates, he was playing for his third major league team in just 4 years in the big leagues.
Lastings Milledge played his first year of pro baseball in 2003 after getting drafted by the Mets in the first round of the 2003 draft. He quickly became the Mets top prospect and he was compared to former Mets great Darryl Strawberry. Lastings Milledge Milledge made his major league debut on the same day Darryl Strawberry had many years before, May 30, 2006. A game tying home run early in his career quickly made Milledge a fan favorite, and the fans gave him the nickname "Blastings Thrilledge". However maturity issues were a problem for young Milledge during his time with the Mets and he was eventually traded to Washington for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider.
This offseason, Milledge has been working hard and he showed up to the Pirates minicamp this year in the best shape of his life. he batted .291 with 4 homeruns for the pirates after rehabbing in the minors from a wrist injury, the Pirates believe Mr. Milledge has proven to be a mature baseball player who is ready to produce in the big leagues. Milledge comes into this season looking to prove all the skeptics wrong and show that he can put together a good season in left field. Look for "Blastings Thrilledge" to make an impact for the Pirates in their pursuit of the NL Central division title in 2010.

----- -------- AUTHOR: joshrcay TITLE: Will Ryan Doumit Stay Healthy in 2010? DATE: 9:16:00 AM ----- BODY:
Injuries, injuries, and more injuries is the real story for this guy. If Doumit can stay healthy...watch for him, as he is one of the three standout guys for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Ryan Doumit made his MLB debut for the Pirates in 2005 as a catcher. His first year he only played 75 games and put up 6 HRs with a pretty medicore .255 batting avgerage, but it was his rookie season. In 2006 he played in 61 games and another 6 HRs and an ugly .208 average. In 2007 he began to look like he might be improving with 83 games played and 9 HRs with a .274 average. Well, he was going in the right direction....
In 2008, Ryan Doumit finally had his breakout year where he played 116 games...his first season having played over 100 games. He hit 15 HRs, had a nice .318 average, and hit 68 RBIs in a not-so-stellar lineup. He also scored 71 runs and had 137 hits with 34 doubles and no triples. This breakout year set fairly high expectations for his 2009 year.
Well, he started off fairly well, untill in mid-April when he broke his wrist. A broken wrist can mess with the swing and effectiveness of the swing for a player. Well, this hurt him mightily. Everything went south from there for Doumit. He only played 71 games because of the injury, he hit 10 HRs, and had a lackluster .250 average. He got 38 RBIs and 31 runs scored with 70 hits, 16 of which were doubles. But not so fast my friend, Doumit hit .346 in September of 2009, showing he might have been making a little bit of a turnaround.
In the first two monts of 2010, I think Doumit will have struggles...maybe only hitting about .260 in April and May. This happens quite often with injuries the year before. But, if he stays healthy, he could easily hit about .310-.320 and hit 20+ homers. This would put him in the top 8 catchers in the league. Although Doumit may not have huge power numbers, he does hit for average and has fairly low strikeout totals, showing nice plate discipline.
Ryan Doumit is one of the three guys to watch for the Pirates in 2010. Those other two are Andrew McCutchen and Garret Jones. But one thing is for certain, Doumit MUST stay healthy for the Pirates to get out of this horrible streak of losing seasons.

----- -------- AUTHOR: BoStros TITLE: Astros 2010 Bullpen DATE: 5:33:00 PM ----- BODY:
Brandon Lyon (C) - Though consistency may not be his most valuable asset (He has had an ERA of 2.68, 4.70 and 2.86 over the last three seasons), with last seasons numbers coming up at a 6.4 H/9 and 1.106 WHIP, he could be a quite valuable asset. I for one am definitely looking forward to seeing him this season. Matt Lindstrom - Though he posted poor numbers last season, he has shown us in the past that he is clearly capable of keeping a game in tact for a closer. Posting ERAs of 3.09 and 3.14 in 2007-2008, he is prone to produce the kind of numbers we need in our bullpen. This flamethrower could be a key producer towards the Astros success this season. Jeff Fulchino - Yet, another potential strong point in the bullpen, Fulchino posted some nice numbers last year with a 1.183 WHIP and 3.40 ERA, not to mention racking up a 6-4 W-L record as a relief pitcher on a losing team. Though I believe 100% that the W-L record for pitchers is completely irrelevant, 6-4 has to mean something when you look at the circumstances Jeff was in. Alberto Arias - Going 3.35 last season in 42 games, Alberto is also quite vulnerable when it comes to being a strong piece of the Astros bullpen. Though his effectiveness seemed to be on a low in his frst 3 games with Houston in 2008, Alberto turned 2009 into a breakout season worth noting. I definitely expect to see another season like that of 2009 from Arias and perhaps even more in the future. Tim Byrdak - Byrdak, posting the second lowest ERA of his career last season, should fit right in with the other RPs we have here in Houston. Though he doesn't have a history of keeping his ERA as low as it was last season, all last season he was pretty dang consistent. If he can keep healthy and continue his reign, I wouldn't mind him coming into numerous games for the 'Stros. Chris Sampson - Perhaps a week link in the pen, Chris has only once in his career pitched a season with an ERA less than 4.22. The year I speak of is 2006 when he pitched a career low 34 innings. Not really your first choice when you need to pull your starter and bring in some relief pitching, but of course, our bullpen has its ups and downs. Samuel Gervacio - Probably one of the more anticipated players in the Astros 2010 bullpen, the 25 year old youngster pitched a 2.14 ERA and 196 ERA+ with 21 ML IP in 2009. Many years ahead of this bright, young player; lets hope he performs them well. Overall - 3.5/5.0 - Rounding it all up, I see consistency as the best word for this 2010 Astros bullpen. With most all players hanging around 2.00 and 3.00 ERAs, I am quite proud of how well we appear coming into this next season. The only thing that really gets me here is that we have this keen, polished bullpen with little to no offense to back it up. Quite a drawback, but I suppose we shall see how far the Astros can get with this offensive void.
----- -------- AUTHOR: erich job TITLE: Tyler Greene, the Cardinals next Shortstop DATE: 2:39:00 PM ----- BODY:
Hello Heaters, today I am going to introduce you to Tyler Greene, the projected Shortstop for the St.Louis Cardinals. Greene was drafted by the Cardinals in the first round of the 2005 amateur draft. Greene split the 2005 season between Low A New Jersey, and High A Palm Beach, hitting a combined .265,with three home runs, and twenty three runs batted in. Greene Started 2006 At Single A Quad Cities, and worked his way back to Palm Beach by seasons end. He hit a combined .253,with twenty home runs, and sixty six runs batted in. Greene spent the 2007 season at Double A Springfield. Due to injury,he only played in sixty five games, finishing with a .244 batting average, eight home runs, and twenty five runs batted in. Greene started the 2008 season with Springfield, working his way to Triple A Memphis by seasons end, finishing with a combined .254 batting average, sixteen home runs, and forty eight runs batted in. In eighty nine games at Memphis in 2009,Greene had career highs in batting average, [.291] slugging percentage, [.482] and on base, plus slugging percentage. [.851] He also hit fifteen home runs, which tied for second most at any level, and forty two runs batted in,which were third most. 2009 was definitely Greene's calling card to the Major Leagues. Greene made his Major League debut on April 30th,2009. In forty eight games with St.Louis, Greene hit .222,with two home runs, and seven runs batted in over 108 at bats. Part of the reason for his offensive digression were his thirty two strikeouts, meaning that he averaged one strikeout every 3.37 at bats,an issue that never affected him in the minors. Obviously most hitters start of slow, and continue to develop as hitters as they get more playing time. Hopefully this will be the case for Tyler Greene, and he will be able to be an everyday Shortstop for the Cardinals for a long time come.
----- -------- AUTHOR: brewcrew25 TITLE: 2010 NL Central Predictions DATE: 1:46:00 PM ----- BODY:
Heading into the 2010 season, the NL Central looks to be quite a race between several teams. I'll be sharing my predictions heading into the new season. 1. St. Louis Cardinals: 90-72 The St. Louis Cardinals are going to take first place again this year. They re-signed Matt Holliday, and an healthy Chris Carpenter should lead them to the NL Central title. I predict that they will end up with 90 wins. 2. Milwaukee Brewers: 87-75 The Brewers are going to take 2nd place in the central. I know that the pitching isn't good at all, but they have made major improvments in the rotation compared to what they had last year. Think about it, they won 80 games with a rotation that consisted of: Gallardo (3.73 ERA) Parra (6.36 ERA) Bush (6.38 ERA) Suppan (5.29 ERA) and Looper (5.22 ERA). They added Randy Wolf and Doug Davis. Randy Wolf pitched very well in LA last year, posting a 11-7 record, with a 3.23 ERA and a very solid 1.10 WHIP. Doug Davis, a former Brewer, posted a 9-14 record, with a 4.12 ERA. The Brewers also added to the bullpen by signing FA RP LaTroy Hawkins. Hawkins formley pitched with the Houston Astros, and posted a 2.13 ERA, and striking out 45 batters in 63.1 IP. He will be setting up Trevor Hoffman. So overall, the rotation got significantly better, and the Brewers added a dependable RP in Hawkins. I think a 7-8 win improvment over last year is defintley possible. 3. Chicago Cubs: 85-77 The Chicago Cubs are probably the hardest to predict. Last year, they finished the season with a 83-78 record, which was 2nd in the NL Central. They should improve slightly because of the injuries they had last year. It's all going to depend on how Alfonso Soriano does, can he produce good numbers, or will he continue to regress? Can Carlos Zambrano stay healthy? How about Ryan Dempster or the whole Cubs rotation? These questions are going to depend on how the Cubs will fare this upcoming season. If everything comes together right, I could see them winning nearly 90 games, but if they have injuries, or players don't play like they are capable of, then I can see them barley finishing above .500. 4. Houston Astros: 77-85 The Astros are going to be pretty bad this season. They lost Hawkins, and Valverde, and the pitching is in shambles right now. On the offensive side, they lost Miguel Tejeda, and Lance Berkman, and Carlos Lee aren't getting any younger, therefore, 77 wins is probably a stretch, but 77 wins is probably the best case sceniaro for the Astros. It's pretty sad to see a team that used to be good, continuing to get worse, but until management wakes up, I don't see the Astros getting better any time soon. It's time for them to trade Oswalt, Lee, and Berkman and rebuild the team. Pence is going to be good, and they have some talent, but they need pitching, and they need it fast. 5. Cincinnati Reds: 75-87 The Reds are another interesting story. I think if everything comes together, they can be near if not slightly above .500, but at the same time, they have Dusty Baker as manager. The pitching is going to depend on how well they do, this goes for most NL central teams. Cueto, and Vazquez need to prove why they were a high pick in the draft, and Aaron Harang needs to lead the rotation with quality innings. Offensivley, I think they are fine with Votto, and Bruce leading the club. I see 80-83 wins if everything goes as planned, but 70-75 wins if the pitching does terrible. 6. Pittsburgh Pirates 70-92 The Pirates have young talent, but aren't quite ready to contend with the big teams yet. The pitching is still developing, and the offense isn't ready to lead them to a good season. They have potential, but give them a few more years. Overall, I think the NL central is going to come down to the 3 main teams (Cardinals/Brewers/Cubs) and the other 3 teams will fight for the 4th, 5th, and 6th place spots.

I would be OK trading Oswalt as well, but I think the fans would be a little too outraged if they traded Berkman. He is a hometown guy that even spent his college days at Rice. I would like to see them get some pitching, but I don't think the fans would react well if they traded Berkman. ----- -------- AUTHOR: MrBaseball09 TITLE: Why Pitchers Can't Stand Braun DATE: 12:26:00 PM ----- BODY:
A recent poll in ESPN The Magazine surveyed over 300 National League pitchers on which players they hate to face the most. And as you probably guessed, Albert Pujols came out on top of the list. But what you probably wouldn't have guessed is that Ryan Braun was a very close second. The reason for this? If your thinking it's because of his incredible success against National League pitchers, your wrong. Although, I'm sure that played a part in his high ranking. But the real reason Braun was ranked so high is because he is quickly making an impression on the rest of the league that he is a cocky, arrogant, young player who needs to take his ego down a notch. In a recent interview with Ryan Braun, the reporter asked Braun what the secret to his success was and he responded by saying, "It is pretty effortless, to me less is more. The less effort that i put in, the easier things seem to happen" "I really believe that I'll make a hit every time (I come to the plate)" "I think Ive admired my home runs too long, but I wouldn't have anything to admire if I wasn't having so much success." Ryan Braun when asked how he felt about being intentionally hit so many times throughout the 2009 season "I take those things as a compliment. It's not something that's going to effect the way that I play the game." Those are the kind of statements that drive opposing pitchers crazy. As much as I love Braun, he really needs to step his ego down a notch or we could have another Gary Sheffield on are hands.

Finally, after a long winter, Spring Training is almost here. Adrenaline rushes through players, coaches, and fans, knowing that the 162 game quest for a title is about to begin. The one big question asked going into Reds camp is this. Who will be there #5 starter on April 5th? Harang, Arroyo, Cueto and Bailey are all locks to make the rotation, but numeous guys will be fighting for 1 spot. Here are the candidates for the final spot available. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Who said Spring Training doesn't matter?!
----- COMMENT: AUTHOR:Blogger Ebes DATE:2/14/2010 07:31:00 AM Thanks for the scoop. Looks like the Reds are really stocked.Looks like a tough and of course controversial deciscion is in Dusty's future. The Reds are in a good position this year and might need who ever ddoesn't come up to the big's, out of camp,in what might shape up to be a protracted stretch run. In a divasion that looks very good. ----- -------- AUTHOR: brewcrew25 TITLE: Milwaukee Brewers: 2010 Season Preview DATE: 10:27:00 PM ----- BODY:
The Milwaukee Brewers are looking to improve from their 80-82 finish last season, let's take a look at what they have done so far in this off-season. Signed Randy Wolf to a 3 year deal. Signed Doug Davis to a 1 year deal. Signed LaTroy Hawkins to a 2 year deal. Signed Greg Zaun to a 1 year deal. Traded J.J. Hardy to the Twins for CF Carlos Gomez. Let's now take a look at the Brewers projected starting depth chart. C: Greg Zaun: Greg Zaun will be the Brewers starting catcher. He has played in the majors since 1995, and has a career .251 AVG/.344 OBP/.388 SLG and has hit a total of 86 homers in 15 seasons. Zaun will replace the light-hitting catcher, and he should be an improvment over Kendall. 1B: Prince Fielder Prince Fielder is the key to the Brewers success next year. If he can produce numbers like he did last season (.299 AVG/46 HR/101 RBI) then the Brewers should at least be competitve. I'm predicting another solid season next year, and he has the chance to hit at least 50 HR's in a given season. His defense has been getting better year after year as well, and he should at least be a medicore defensive player. 2B: Rickie Weeks Rickie Weeks needs to prove what we all know he is capable of. Last year, before he got hurt, Weeks hit .272 with 9 HR's in 37 games. He will be replacing Lopez, who was great last year for the Brewers. I predict Weeks will hit around .275 with 20 SB's, and 20 HR's, which is going to be a huge step if he can accomplish that. 3B: Casey McGehee McGehee was acquired by the Brewers before spring traning last year. He was a waiver wire pick up, and was nearly unstoppable in spring traning. For his efforts, he made the club. Bill Hall completley struggled though, and was shipped to the Seattle Mariners (he's now on the Red Sox) McGehee got his chance to start, and he proved himself hitting .368 in 23 games in June, and followed that month with another solid one in July, .300 AVG in 20 games. He finished the season hitting .301 and belting 16 HR's, while driving in 66. He finished in the hunt for the rookie of the year, but lost to Chris Coghlan of the Florida Marlins. McGehee will get to play everyday, and should produce at least similar numbers as he did last season. SS: Alcides Escobar Escobar is going to be the player I will be keeping my eye on the most. He will be replacing J.J. Hardy at SS, who was traded to the Twins for Gomez. Escobar got to play some last season, and did very well in a short span. In 38 games, Escobar hit .304, while driving in 11 runs, and hitting one home run. He provides the speed that the Brewers desperatley need, and his defense his very good. He should be a player that could be in contention for rookie of the year, and I expect him to do very well in his first full season. LF: Ryan Braun Braun is going to be entering into his fourth full season in the major leagues. So far in his young career, Braun has hit an outstanding .308, and has 103 home runs in 422 games. Last year was his best season hitting .320, 32 homeruns, and knocking in 114. He also stole 20 bases. Fielder and Braun should carry the team once again, and should have more opportunites to knock in runs if Weeks and Escobar can get on base. CF: Carlos Gomez Carlos Gomez was acquired via the Twins for J.J. Hardy. He was a big time prospect at one time, even being the main piece in the Johan Santana deal to the Mets. He should at least add some speed to the team, and he is known for his defense. I'm hoping he can at least hit .250, and stealing 15-20 bases. RF: Corey Hart Corey Hart needs to pick it up if the Brewers want any chance to win the NL Central. He has struggled the last two seasons, and he can't lay off the outside slider which is hurting him. Hopefully he can at least put up numbers similar to his 07 campaign (.295 AVG/.353 OBP/24 HR) we'll see, but he is young, and has great potential. Overall, I really think the Brewers offense has improved over last season. They added speed to the lineup in Escobar, and Gomez, Weeks should be healthy as well. It's all going to come down to staying healthy, and hoping Hart can return to form, and that Escobar and McGehee can handle the job at SS and 3B. If these things can happen, I can see the Brewers winning 85-90 games depending on the pitching.

Hey everyone, it's John here, and I'll have your Astros news & insight covered. Glad to be with y'all! In the year of 2005, sitting on a comfortable payroll of $76.8 Million, the Houston Astros were on the merge of an unforgettable Cinderella season. We had all we needed; pitching that did more than suffice and an offense strong enough to overwrite the opposition. Where did we go from there? All the wrong directions. Our domination on the mound diminished mostly due to losing Clemens and Pettite, not to mention Lidge losing it. Our payroll has gone way up, and for what? So we could end the season with a W-L record below .500? Is seeing names like Tejada, Lee, & Valverde really worth paying an extra $26.2 million with little to no hope of a future in our farm system? You know what's worse? We, the fans, are paying this money. We'll buy overpriced seats and 5 dollar refreshments and/or food so that they can pay their players to lose? Truth is, they are screwing us, and themselves, over by continuously throwing money around at players they see as fit for our team because of the tickets they might sell and the trophies they might bring home. I'm sick of it. Drop 'em. Be rid of the players that aren't contributing to our success. You want an investment? Invest in a long term team. Find a solid, PERMANENT catcher for our pitchers, find pitchers that can keep us in the game and build an offense that can create enough runs to overpower the opposition. This is what everyone likes to see in their team and though I wish otherwise, with our current management, I don't expect to see it happen anytime soon. It doesn't take so much money to create a strong team. Look at the marlins going .537, paying much less than half of what we did last season. Coincidence? I don't think so. Note to Astros management - Give us a break. Stop spending our money on what we don't need and start investing into what we do need.
