A power threat for the Pirates? Could it be? Well just check out this guy...
Garret Jones is his name. Jones made his MLB debut with the Twins in 2007 at 26 years old. He really only burst onto the scene when he joined the Pirates. I'm sure most people don't know this, but Garret Jones only played in 82 games (about half the season), and still managed 21 homeruns, 44 RBIs, 45 runs, and a .293 batting average. Those are some impressive numbers for just 82 games. He also had 92 hits, 21 doubles, and a triple. It is projected that if he would have played the whole season, he would have had 33 homeruns...which is right up there with some of the elites. The only thing that he is somewhat lacking is speed and plate discipline, but that comes with every power hitter.
One thing that is distinct about Jones is his tendancey to have huge bursting hot streaks and then go cold for a little while. That's one thing that could be a worry for the Pirates. Although he can be streaky, Jones shows that he can hit for average. In the second half, Jones never really hit too many bumps.
In his first full year, he may hit some bumps, but otherwise I see him hitting 30+ homers and having about a .280+ average. Watch for him, he will be a huge help for us as we are mightily struggling right now. I'm also going to look for him to better his plate discipline. He has the pop, he just needs the consistantcy and he could make it to the top 15 first basemen by the end of 2010. Along with McCutchen and Doumit, Jones is a guy that will help this team get to a winning season.

I'll be looking forward to the barrage of homeruns the Pirates will hit this year, and the winning season.

i wonder why it took him so long to make it to the majors, i hope he is the real deal. the problem is what position to put him out. he's not really an outfielder although the pirates want to play him in right. he's more of a 1st basemen but it looks like they want pierce at that position while facing lefties.

Yea, we'll have to wait and see. Jeff Clement is also an option at 1B.
