TITLE: Good deals so far for the Cubs

Ok, lets get this clear before I start. Carlos Marmol isn't a 40 saves a year guy. Heck, he is barely a 35 saves a year guy. But I really believe that this is a good deal for the Cubs. They get a second tier closer, who I believe has the arm to become a lower high tier closer. He isn't Mo Rivera, but he is the best the Cubs can do. For the amount of expectation I had of Marmol, I am pleasently surprised. 1 year, 2.12 million I can deal with, that isnt a huge amount for a guy who can potentially decide 35 or so games for the Cubs this year. I haven't got a problem with him. Another big deal in the Windy City this offseason, Xavier Nady coming to the Cubs. A solid 4th OF with the Yankees, could be very important out in the outfield this year for the Cubs. Along with Bay to the Mets, my best offseason deal in NL. What I do have a problem with, is the lack of a good, solid pitcher being added to the rotation. Sure, Dempster is OK. Lilly is good. Zambrano, is well, Zambrano. Other guys are OK. OK doesnt win divisions. OK doesnt win leagues. Most importantly, OK doesn't win you the World Series.

Marmol has only been a closer for 2 months. How do you know he's not a 40 or 35 saves a year guy?

I agree with Cubbies in saying that it is too early to call how many saves Marmol to get in my opinion. I agree with the Nady accuisition being a good deal for the Cubs but I think saying it is the 2nd best accuisition of the offseason in the NL is a stretch. You mentioned Bay already, there also is the Phils getting Doc and Arizona brought in Ian Kennedy and Edwin Jackson just to name a couple. I also didn't see anything about the Cubs dumping Bradly which was a huge part of the offseason. The guy was a clubhouse cancer, even though you got another bad contract in return your team is still probably better off.
